Winter Camping 101: What to Pack

Cold-weather camping rewards preparation. Here's the checklist our field team uses before every winter trip.

Tent pitched in snow with mountains in the background at sunrise

Sleep System

A sleeping bag rated at least 10-15°F below the expected low, paired with an insulated sleeping pad, is non-negotiable. Don't rely on the bag alone to block cold from the ground.

Layering

Base layer, insulating layer, waterproof shell. Avoid cotton entirely — it holds moisture and loses its insulating value when wet.

Shelter

A 4-season tent handles snow load and wind far better than a 3-season tent. If you're only buying one tent, make it count for the conditions you'll actually face.
